Cat Food Types: Dry, Wet, Canned, Raw

There are 3 types of cat nourishment: natural, industrial (that is ready to use) and combined (this food is natural and prepared by the cat owner).

Among the ready-to-eat food for cats, there is dry, wet, canned and raw food.

Dry food for cats

Dry cat foods is made up of dried food ingredients (meat, offal, cereals, vegetables, etc.), the amount of moisture in these feeds is minimal. So, the cat needs to stay hydrated. If there is no enough water the cat becomes dehydrated.

Many manufacturers claim that such nourish is well-adjusted, but sometimes the use of low-quality products can cause kidney stone disease, liver, and stomach ache. The advantages of such feeds are accessibility, long shelf life. It is obvious that dry food gives the owner not that much trouble. The question is only about the correctly selected brand of dry food for the animal. You need to take the cat`s age, state of health, individual characteristics of the body into consideration. Moreover, pay attention to the quality, because manufacturers can cheat sometimes. And instead of health-giving ingredients, they add the feed which contains feathers, bones, intestines, brains, etc.

Wet food for cats

Wet cat foods are available in spider bags of 85-100 grams; i.e.one serving is normally used for one feeding. Fair-minded companies make their wetfeed from high-quality meat and other healthy ingredients. Such food has lesshumidity compared to canned food, so if the cat eats it, there is practically no need in bare water. Mostly wet feeds come in the form ofstew. An open package of this kind cannot stay open for a long time – the food dries up,and spoils.

Canned food for cats

Canned food should contain meat, broth, vegetables or fruits, vitamins, and minerals. The main benefits of it are its taste (usually cats love it), sealed packaging (if the packaging is not damaged food stays fresh and tasty agelong). Such feed may be released in the form of pastes, stew or broth. Canned products can replace high-grade natural nutrition in cases when the manufacturer does not add to the structure unhealthy dyes and preservatives, flavorings, as well as used only high-quality items (not forbidden by-products). By the way, the packaging cannot stay open for a long time, because the freshness will be gone. Canned food should be shifted to a glass container and stored in the fridge.

Raw food for cats

Raw diet for cats means fresh meat or organs, and bones. It is called BARF and stands for biologically appropriate raw food. Bones and raw foods are available at the stores, but you could also make it by yourself. Though, in the latter case, you should consult the vet or the nutritionist to make it well-balanced. Biologically-appropriate diet defenders claim that this ration is maximum parsimony to the ration of wild cats. Unfortunately feeding cats with raw meat can be dangerous to the people who live around. There may be extremely harmful pathogens in the unprepared meat of low quality.

Cat Food Classes

There are 4 cat food classes: economy, premium, super premium and holistic food.

Economy food

The food of this class is extremely adverse for your kitten. It`s more like MacDonald`s or KFC for people. Without a doubt, it is tasty but damaging. With bright packaging, such brands as “Whiskas” or “Friskies” convince through the advert that their foods are nutritious and consist of lots of vitamins and minerals. Well, that’s only the advertising tool. In sober fact, the number of preservatives and other chemicals is higher than the amount of healthy staff. More than that, the presence of real meat in such food remains doubtful.

Premium food

For a little bit higher price of the food of this class, you can buy less harmful feed. However, there are still various additives and replacements. On the other hand, there is palpable more fresh animal protein among the constituents. The most trendy brands of premium food are Hills, Bozita, Iams, Natural Choice, Happy Cat, Brit, Royal Canin. The last one is of comparably higher quality than the other, though after its release in Russia it is no longer recommended by the veterinarians.

Super premium food

Such brands as Bosh SANABELLE, 1stChoice, Cimiao, Profine Adult Cat, ProNature Holistic are considered to be the super premium food for cats. The main reason is its composition which provides for a high price. You won’t find agents and preservatives in them. Though there is high-quality meat balanced with vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.

Holistic food

Holistic food is not for gourmets at all. According to many professional nutritionists, this food is absolutely tasteless for the cats, and sometimes it is very hard for them to get used to it. More than that, it is very expensive and not every cat owner aware of this class of cat food. The reason is that it was made as a professional food and is mostly bought for pedigreed cats.

How to Choose Dry Cat Food?

Here are some tips for you to make the right choice at the store:

Tip #1 Watch the compound carefully

Some manufacturers add corn, wheat, rice and carbohydrates in order to fill the canned or dry cat foods. Those items are absolutely unnecessary for the fluffy friends. On the contrary keep a close eye on the protein, amino acid and taurine. These elements should contain the poultry, fish or meat that is in the constitution. More than that food should be refined with fatty acids, enzymes, minerals and vitamins. Though, there shouldn`t be too much of those elements. They are harmful in big amounts!

Tip #2 Do not forget about water

Some cats have such a huge animus toward water that they even do not want to drink it. So you need to make sure that the food you’ve chosen to your pet contains enough hydrate in its composition. Some dry food can be also mixed with the water.

Tip #3 New week – new menu

I doubt that you would like to eat corndogs day by day for the rest of your life! Only if you are a real fan of them. Just kidding! You definitely wouldn`t like to live like that as well as your kitten. So, do not make it bored with its ration. What is more, unchanged flavor of that or another food can make your pet get “food addicted”. Make it fun and tasty. The kicker is only in attitude. Be a caring owner!

Tip #4 No chemistry allowed

With the aim of making the food stay fresh longer some companies add chemical stabilizers. For example, BHT and BHA are the most popular preservatives of that kind and they are extremely harmful. Both these elements can cause cellular breakdown and behavior changes. Ethoxyquin which is also used as a preserver in many foods may influence the immunity directly. Such changes can make your cat be extremely imperilment to the various allergies and trigger the weight problems.  This list can be continued endlessly. Remember, chemicals in food as welcome as snow in harvest. So, again, watch the list constituents attentively and find the AAFCO approval on the label of the food.

Tip #5 Always check up the expiration date

Seems to be an obvious advice, but still I’m sure that it is better to show the “shit-picking attitude” than to run like a mad thing to a vet later. And also check up the package! The food can be spoiled because of the spoiled air-tightness. Just, always be attentive. That’s it.

FAQs

At what age can a kitten eat cat food?

Well, it always depends on the breed and the general kitten’s condition. Of course, the best advice would be to consult the vet or the breeder. Though, I can tell you that Daffy ate a high quality “pâté” blended with warm kitten milk replacer. Then, I started to give her a wet pouch and finally we are eating dry food. Sometimes I give Daffy a little piece of bacon. Well, she likes it, but I do it very seldom.

How often should I feed my cat?

I probably would say that I don`t know. But I know that you could find out it by yourself. You need to arm yourself with a notebook and a set of measuring cups. Follow the instructions to your brand of the cat food, but look carefully on the reaction whether the kitten wants more or on the contrary it started to put on weight. It is a long process, but that is a matter of health. Even the most expensive brand won’t give you the 100% perfect eating scheme for your cat. You need just to take your time and make notes. Remember, that it is not even about how often or how many, it is more about what it is eating.

Do indoor cats need special food?

Yes, domestic animals, in particular cats in their majority are very lazy. So, they need a special configuration of vitamins, minerals, fats and amino acids that would help control the weight of the animal without special physical activity. Carefully read the feed packaging of your chosen brand.

What is a complete cat food?

Complete food provides composed diet to your kitten. In its makeup, there are all the healthy carbs, vitamins and protein it needs to receive daily. You don’t need to add any further food to it.

Is there meat in cat food?

There should be meat, but not the by-products or animal digests. Chicken, for instance, according to AAFCO should be a bare mix of flash and skin without feet, heads, and feathers. Foods can also include beef tallow and fish or cuttings of fish (without bones, of course). The healthier you want your cat to be, further in the composition the by-products should stand. However, it makes the food’s price higher.

Is it OK to eat cat food?

Well, you must certainly try it, if you like the smell, of course. But it should not be your regular menu. The fodders were created especially for cats and believe me, there was a reason. Cats and people have different blood structure. I`ve tried it, but only once. You see, Daffy is jealous!

To Sum Up

To conclude, I must say, that like people cats and kittens deserve tasty and healthy nourishment. So, our cat-owners’ duty is to choose the safest and healthiest food, love, feed and never leave our pets! Oh, Daffy seems to be hungry! I must go! See you soon! Make the right choice!

Love this! I’ve been using the Rachel Ray kitten food, but it’s not really working out for us (my baby doesn’t seem to like it half the time!) and so I was looking for a new food to feed her. I think I’ll probably go with the Purina food, the first one on your list for kittens – it looks great, and it worked for our other cats. We just branched out to try something new, but it looks like we’re going back to old faithful! Thanks for the resource!
