The 10 Best Guinea Pig Cages to Buy in 2019

best guinea pig cages

Hey, you animal lovers! Let’s talk about a guinea pig. Nowadays it is not only one of the most widespread pets, but also it is the best present for those who have successfully entered elementary school. And it is the correct approach, I think! They are small, fluffy, quite animals with a deep sight that looks into the darkest places of your soul and teach us how to love. Interesting that it was domesticated long-long ago. Some scientists suggest that it happened more than 3,000 years ago and the Incas were the one who made this. The other group of scholars believes that the domestication of these beautiful creatures began even earlier! Imagine 7,5 thousand years ago South American Indians dug tunnels for their pets so that they would be comfortable living in their homes. Wow! Well, I will miss the fact that some of them used guinea pigs in rituals, though without a doubt they fed them with very nutritious fish by-products. More than that in those conditions that were from our modern point of view the total chaos they didn’t use cages to keep their pets at home. During the day, they freely ran around the village and at night they came to the homes of their owners.

Well, a lot has changed since those times. Today we do not use guinea pigs for the rituals and the majority of us adhere to the opinion that they are called so because their meat reminds the pig meat and in the 16th century England their price was about 1 guinea. They are our best friends now, and we do not eat our friends… anymore! We have to choose the coziest, safe and suitable home for it. That is why you are reading this article. So, my and guinea pigs’ dear friend settle in and listen to the most up-to-date information, not only about the most practical cages of the highest quality for your pet but also the peculiarities of guinea pig care.

Types of Guinea Pig Cages

The day to choose the cage for your cavy has definitely come. And take to the consideration that you could not keep your pet inside the one cardboard box you brought it into your house. It should be a well-organized space of decent size and appropriate filler. Remember that each rodent should have its personal space. So, if you have several guinea pigs take a notice that each one should have not less than 7.5 square feet of space. Then, it is very important to put the cage as far as possible from drafts and heaters. And also, you should use the natural filler, but let’s talk about that little bit later.

So there are the following types of cages:

  • Aquariums

It is most popular type of cages in all digests. It is much cheaper and still extremely popular. Nevertheless, it is a widespread delusion that it is a safe type of cages. On the contrary, in spite of its solidity or it is even better to say because of its solidity and even impermeability your poor fellow doesn`t receive enough fresh air. It doesn’t mean of course that your animal doesn’t breath but imagine that you live your whole life in the small room never airing it out. The constant headaches, in this case, are absolutely indivertible! And what about your guinea pig? You can tell if something is not up to you. But you little friend has an only short barely heard squeeze. And you will never know what’s wrong until it would be unable to move because of pain. Ugh, that’s the scary image, right? So, do not buy aquarium cages. These things are for fish, they do not breath. And if there are still not enough arguments in favor of not buying the aquarium cage, look through the available items. They too small for your rodent and you won’t be able to add another cavy, because there would be not enough place for them. Telling you the funny fact – guinea pigs are social animals, but they do not like to be too close to others of their kind.

Oh, and one more thing I almost forgot about. Glass does not let practically any sound to enter inside the cage. That makes your pet live almost in the total vacuum. That is why, by the way, so many pet owners found their pets scary of any noise when they are out of their aquariums.

  • Commercial cages

This type of cages name says for itself. Those are cages which are in most cases the first home for these pets. You can find the name «Pet store cages» as well. They definitely do not meet the size recommendations, though are much cheaper than aquariums. Their functional lies in the hanging bottle of water and the spot for food. Nevertheless, if you are going to buy your guinea pig a commercial cage make sure that it is big enough. Sometimes when people do not what to spend much money, they unite two cages and arrange tunnels inside. Well, it`s up to you, but to my humble opinion, it’s better to pay more once that one hundred times bit by bit.

  • Self-made cages

Well, such cages are a perfect variant for those who really like constructing something. There are some advantages, though. Of course, the first and the most obvious pros is that you can put all your effort and imagination in it. Moreover, you can make it much larger for less amount of money. Also, making everything up to your taste you can add all kinds of toys for your pet. The ponderable disadvantage is that it is quite riskily to use such a cage if you have dogs, cats or other pets, which can freely walk around the house.

  • Storage tub

Again, if you are not an owner for other big pets, this type of habitat for your guinea pig could be more than perfect. There is a great variety of sizes and shapes. You can buy it in the nearest hardware store. Supply the tub with the water bowl, newspaper bedding and some food of course and your pet will be happy. More than that it is always ready to be moved to another room or even house and you have no need to disturb you fuzzy. And, hey, do not forget that this is its home, so make sure you’ve hidden the lid away. Or at least you’ve made some windows. You don’t need any … um… contingencies! Oh, and of course, no drafts!

The Guinea Pig Cage Cleaning

Hygiene… That’s everything in our modern life. Far ago in the faraway past, people who domesticated these wonderful animals did not clean them daily. More than that, they did not have cages to clean. Everything has changed, and today the association of the veterinarians and I advise to do the cleaning day every week. This will not only reduce the odor, which is important. (I do not really like the houses where from the door you can tell that somewhere in the house there is a poor dirty animal) But also, such a procedure will prolong the life of your pet.

So, the cage cleaning consists of 3 main parts.

Part #1 – Guinea Pig

The life of your fluffy friend wouldn’t be that long, and the odor wouldn’t be unrecognizable if you forget to wash the animal itself. So, to do this with minimum stress to your buddy (actually guinea pigs are very timid), follow the instructions:

  1. As softly as you can remove the pet from the page. Though you should be confident. On the contrary, kiddo will run away. Hold it with both your hands and support the hindquarters as well.
  2. Before the cleaning begins to make sure that you have the backup. By backup, I mean the temporary shelter for your pet. There should be no extremely loud sounds around. Also, make sure that there are no drafts.
  3. Brush your guinea pig every day if you have the long-hare breed. But this doesn’t mean that you need to wash it every day. Normally pets of that kind should be washed 2-3 times during the year. Of course, it can become too sticky or smelly. Then, do not be shy and wash it. But, again, you should be very gentle!

Part #2 – Cleaning the Cage

  1. Waste and food should be removed. After that is done do not forget to use the wet napkin to spot-clean the cage. I apropos use the wet paper towel. Gather up all the spoiled bedding and change it.
  2. Throwing the old food and putting the new one is strictly forbidden. Do not forget to wash the water and the food bowls with soap. This move will help you to kill all the bacteria.
  3. If you are not a fan of chemical detergent use the vinegar instead. And I am completely sure that this is the correct approach. In fact, vinegar is much cheaper. The recipe is simple – take 32 parts of water to the 1 part of white vinegar.
  4. Make sure that you removed all the moister from the cage. The damp bedding can be the reason for many problems. Do not put the health of your fuzzy under the risk.

Part #3 – Set the Home

  1. To make the lodging of my lovely piggy comfier and the cleaning faster I put the clean newspaper on the bottom. Then comes the bedding which is about 2-3 inches deep. A little bit further I will tell you everything about the types of bedding. Be passionate!
  2. Remember that the temperature also matters. It shouldn’t be higher than 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not put it near to the heater!

Types of Guinea Pig Cage Bedding

As far as I’m an experienced guinea pig owner I understand that buying the most expensive and trendy cage doesn’t mean to be a good pet parent. That is why I want to give you a brief review of the types of products for guinea pig bedding – the essential part of the cage.

The best choice of the bedding material, from my point of view, would be aspen, fleece and paper-based bedding. Those are natural materials that would not harm your pet. Let’s look closer on them.

  • Paper-based bedding

It absorbs the odor and moist and is extremely soft. It is cheap and it is chosen by the majority of the guinea pig owners. Though, it still has some drawbacks you need to know about.

  1. Some paper beddings are in fact sticky. According to the consumers it depends on the producers, but not every paper bedding soaks up the urine well.
  2. Also, it depends on the brand, but some paper beddings have the paper dust in the package. It can get to the cage with the bedding. When it is get inhaled by the guinea pig it causes severe respiratory inflammation.
  3. If choosing the paper as the bedding for your pet, make sure that your piglet does not eat it. That happens once in a blue moon, but some guinea pigs like to have a snack with paper. You’d better monitor the pet’s attitude towards the paper before leaving it alone with it. Eating paper, by the way, can cause serious digestive problems both for pigs and humans.
  • Fleece bedding

Fleece bedding is still considered being know-how in the world of cage fillers. The great saving is obvious. You do not need to buy the new pack of filler every time. The trick is in laundering. Yes, it could be very exhausting, but, hey, we have washing machines, right? Personally, I didn’t manage to find some cons in this type of bedding. It is a very reliable absorbent and it is much cheaper. More than that it takes much less time to change the bedding as the paper-based bedding, for instance, consists of small particles. However, as I said earlier there are no cons for me, some people consider the extra layer of the towels or newspapers under the fleece as a significant drawback. Though, it’s true. In the case of fleece bedding, it’s better to make the bottom layer more absorbent. Also, it’s better to have a couple of the bedding. In case of serious contamination, you know.

  • Aspen bedding

Aspen bedding is more expensive, and it doesn’t soak up the urine as good as paper or fleece bedding. Moreover, a lot of buyers admit that they are compelled to clean the cage more often using it. Though, I believe that it is probably the best bedding of all. It is dust-free, scent-free, and chemical-free. Plus, it is non-toxic and 100% eco-friendly! You will never find any aromatic oil in its composition.

You can choose something different for your pet, but here are the taboos you should never use as bedding:

  • Shavings of any kind

It seems like cedar or pine could work as bedding, but you need to be more accurate while choosing the stuff your pet would be surrounded with. Have you ever thought about its lungs? Well, they are in hundreds of time smaller than yours, that is why such harmless for a human thing like cedar and pine shavings odor could be enormously dangerous for your cavy. However, it is believed that the dry pine is quite safe, as all the oils have gone away, no one would give a 100% guarantee.

  • Corn husks

Veterinarians do not recommend it because of several reasons. First of all, it is eatable, and it is not the healthiest food for the rodents. The intestinal blockages are just the tip of the iceberg of problems it can cause. Secondly, it is very likely to mold. And the last but not least it is also a very bad absorbent.

  • Straw

Though cavies normally enjoy chilling on the hay a lot, straw doesn’t function as the bedding for them. It has no absorbing qualities at all. The water, urine, and anything else would stay in the unchanged form just on the background of the cage. That makes the cage automatically like hell for the rodent and heaven for bacteria. What is more, take to the consideration that the end of every straw is pretty sharp, so it could easily be stuck into your pet’s eye, nose, paw or where not!

  • Cat litter

It is enriched with chemicals that neutralize the smell of urine and feces. Those chemicals are safe, though they should be used as intended. You do not sit on the toilet for the whole day, right? Well, normally no one does, as well as guinea pigs. This kind of bedding was produced for one noble goal. Do not try to change it.

Something for Entertainment

Except for fresh and tasty food, water, comfy bedding, and roomy cage cavies need some additional staff in order not to be bored. Here are some tips about things you can put into your guinea pig home without any hesitations.

  • Cardboard boxes or wooden block (Life-long growing teeth need something to chew. Make sure that there are no cramps on boxes and paint on blocks);
  • Handmade toys from boxes or paper bags (Toys should be large as cavies could mistake small ones for food);
  • Hammock (Not all the joy for ferrets. Though make sure that the hammock is well fixed);
  • Tunnel or hut (Guinea pigs are extremely shy and the need a quite warm and comfy place to hide in. This kind of toy, as well as the previous, could be made out of paper boxes or even toilet rolls. The only criterion is that it is free of any metal or plastic particles as piggy could chew them from time to time);
  • Love (Any toy could replace the warmth of the parents’ hands. You are the parent for those fluffy babies. Cuddle them on a daily basis).

Forbidden Foods and Stuff for Guinea Pigs

Sometimes guinea pig owners with best intentions, of course, try to diversify the life and the menu of their cavies. They do it by intuition, and unfortunately often, the intuition betrays them. In order not to be unfounded I decided in the very end of my digest give you the list of those foods and things that you’d better hide from your fuzzy friend.

  • Coffee;
  • Ivy;
  • Avocado;
  • Mint;
  • Preserves;
  • Rhododendron
  • All kinds of potatoes;
  • Meat;
  • Chocolate;
  • Salt;
  • Sugar;
  • Onion and garlic;
  • Bread;
  • Grapes;
  • Small plastic or metal toys;
  • Pine or cedar shavings;
  • Corncobs;
  • Sugar paper.

As the guinea pig is natural vegetarian, meat and other animal products are strictly forbidden for it. That’s just beyond the natural nourishment for the cavy. Vegetables seemed to be more appropriate, but some of them (those that I’ve mentioned in the least above) are poisonous. Be careful with them, especially with the ivy, because it is poisonous for dogs and cats as well! And finally, sweets are extremely ill-advised. Pets do not digest simple sugars properly.

FAQs

I sincerely hope that this article truly helped you to prepare your home a mind which is even more important to introduce the new member into the family. Nevertheless, I am sure that still there are some questions. Here are the most frequently asked among them.

What kind of cages are ok for guinea pigs to live in?

Well, the dwelling for your fluffy friend should be chosen in accordance to the four main criteria: enough space, safe from drafts and other animals, fresh enough to live in and of course it should be equipped with natural or recycled bedding. The best variant is to make it by yourself. It is much cheaper, and you will surely put all your soul in it! But if you’ve read the article attentively you know about my taboo – aquarium. That is appropriate only for scarecrows. Sorry…

What should I put in a guinea pig cage?

Choosing the filling is not a common business, I would even say crucial. Make sure that it minimizes the smell and that it was made of organic stock. My personal top 3 bedding are natural paper, fleece and aspen bedding.

How to care for guinea pigs?

The first point of the «how to care for anyone» list would be love. And very preferably would be not to forget to clean the cage at least one time per week. Do not forget to add freshwater, food, and bedding as and when necessary. Also, do not forget to pet your guinea pig from time to time. You obviously could not make this animal execute commands, but you must make it not to be afraid of people, especially if you’ve chosen the aquarium cage.

How can I get rid of the smell in my guinea pig’s cage?

The key is again in the hygiene of the cage, which is based on the clarity of the bedding. The schedule suggests to do the spring cleaning once a week, but it is just the bare minimum. You fuzzy would be much healthier if you get rid of leftovers and droppings daily.

How to clean guinea pig cage?

First of all, you need to be sure that there is no guinea pig inside. Well, do not leave it just on the couch. Prepare the smaller, but also cozy place beforehand. Then put some freshwater and food into the containers and spray the cage with the gentle detergent.

Final Word

My dear readers, I sincerely hope that this article helped you to choose the right house for your friend. Moreover, I believe that you will follow my advice carefully. Obviously, I am not the omniscient guinea pig guru, but I do know some secrets, and I was really happy to share them with you. The final tip for today – cuddle your piggy more often then you clean its cage.
